Simple Steps to Level Up Your Community, Career and Connections

Posted By: Amie Robertshaw Development,

With the upcoming Education Conference and Trade Show, we’ve been hearing the phrase ‘Level Up’ a lot! It got me thinking—what does it really mean to ‘Level Up,’ and how can we apply it in ways that make a real impact? Whether it’s in our communities, careers, or connections, there are always opportunities to grow, improve, and take things to the next level. Sometimes, it’s about learning a new skill or embracing new technology. Other times, it’s about strengthening relationships, mentoring others, or finding fresh ways to collaborate. No matter where you are in your journey, small, intentional actions can lead to meaningful progress. So, as we gear up for this exciting event, let’s explore some simple yet powerful ways we can Level Up together!

COMMUNITIES

People Buy from People

One of the biggest mistakes we can make is to assume that the culture of a community is dictated by a budget. The shiny, brand-new communities with innovative amenities and top of the line interior finishes may seem hard to level up – especially if you’re managing a 1980s vintage product that is still sporting original appliances.

However, the way you make residents feel can ultimately be the most valuable amenity your community offers. If you want your community to be the leader in your comp set, start by evaluating the customer experience that you and your team offer.

CAREERS

There’s Always More to Learn

There’s no denying that property management is a tough job. Just doing the bare necessities can exhaust a full day worth of time and energy. But if you want to Level Up in your career, I would encourage you to be intentional about how you focus your time and energy, and allow some space for continued education, leadership development and outlining and communicating a career plan.

If you think you may know all there is to know, you don’t. There are thousands of different perspectives and this industry is constantly changing.  So enroll in the classes, and attend the conferences, and when you’re an expert, speak on the panels and teach the classes!
The more leadership positions you put yourself in directly, the more opportunities will be available for personal and professional growth, and in setting your 1, 3 and 5 year goals.

CONNECTIONS

Cultivate Your Network through Mentoring

In this tight-knit industry, we are fortunate to have a strong pool of connections. This industry attracts a lot of like-minded people, so it can be fairly easy to find your work family– the people that you know you can rely on to support you professionally and cheer you on personally.
Finding a mentor and becoming a mentor is a great way to level up your already strong connections. Seek out someone that you trust and that is doing things you aspire to do. Then foster that connection. When challenges arise, or when you just can’t seem to see things clearly, your mentor can help you navigate.

In return, allow yourself to be a mentor to someone else. I attended a seminar recently and the speaker was talking about how there is likely someone that looks up to you and they are quietly hoping that one day they can do what you do. They may just need a little guidance. If you can provide that for them, they will forever be grateful.

Leveling up isn’t just about making big, dramatic changes—it’s about consistently seeking ways to improve, whether in your community, career, or connections. By prioritizing the resident experience, investing in your professional growth, and fostering meaningful mentorships, you can create lasting value that extends beyond just your daily tasks. The Education Conference and Trade Show is the perfect opportunity to put this mindset into action. Take what you learn, build new relationships, and challenge yourself to grow. Because when we commit to leveling up, we don’t just elevate ourselves—we elevate the entire industry. Let’s make it happen!
