AAMD Purchases Thanksgiving Meal for 65 Families
AAMD partners with Family HomeStead to feed Colorado families this Thanksgiving
The Apartment Association of Metro Denver (AAMD) is working with Family HomeStead to feed 65 families this Thanksgiving holiday. AAMD has purchased gift cards for each of the 65 families to purchase food for their Thanksgiving meals.
“As some families have faced challenges this year, no family deserves to be in need at Thanksgiving,” said Mark Williams, executive vice president of the Apartment Association of Metro Denver. “Our relationship with Family HomeStead goes beyond feeding Colorado families as we also support combatting homelessness in Colorado. We support families in their search for housing support Family HomeStead’s future endeavors in ending the homeless cycle.”
Family HomeStead helps families with children overcome the crisis of homelessness through housing help, income support and addressing underlying causes that lead to homelessness in the first place.
“We are grateful for the nearly $5,000 donation by the Apartment Association of Metro Denver,” said Les Jones, executive director of Family HomeStead. “The holidays are hard enough for families in need, and with the added stress of impacts from a global pandemic, it’s heartwarming to provide the means for meal on Thanksgiving.”
Linda Byers, a former resident of Family HomeStead is now president of the Resident Council for her housing community. She recently reached out to Family HomeStead because she has started her own non-profit organization, a clothing closet to serve low-income families and individuals, and wanted to provide her services to some of the Family HomeStead clients.
“I was inspired to start this nonprofit and help families in need because I experienced homelessness,” Byers said. “The assistance my family received from Family HomeStead and other community agencies moved me to give back to her community. I swore when I got back on my feet that I was going to lend a helping hand to those in the same situation I was in so they could get back on their feet, too.”
AAMD has donated more than $250,000 to Family HomeStead in the last 22 years. AAMD’s additional efforts for keeping Colorado families in their homes include a new partnership with the Resident Relief Fund. AAMD and Colorado Apartment Association members have raised more than $160,000 for rent relief for Colorado residents.
